WILD CHERRY (Prunus avium) also (Prunus serotina)

The wild cherry is also known as gean, and as the sweet cherry. It is a small deciduous tree with round black fruit which provides food for birds and is edible by humans.

It grows to a height of 15m and can live for 200 years.

Leaves appear in April and flowers in April or May. The fruits ripen in June.

The wood is reddish brown and is highly prized for timber.

The cultivated cherry trees are derived from Prunus avium.
